Last October, £520,000 was bid at Bonhams for a c.1968 monumental Tall Bottle Vase with Disc by Hans Coper, setting a record for any studio potter. A large stoneware vessel by studio potter John Ward (1938- 2023) sold for £35,000 (plus 25% buyer's premium) as part of a private collection of his work offered by Dreweatts on July 11.

Born in 1938 London, John Ward is regarded as one of Britons greatest potters. Influenced by ancient pre-glaze pottery from China and Cypress he was inspired by more modem influences such as Hans Coper's formal strength, Lucie Rie's colour palette and Ian Godfrey's playful textures.

Ward's pottery draws influence from a number of ancient and modern sources. He referred to the forms of ancient Chinese and Egyptian pre-glaze pottery and early Cypriot and Persian bowls, as well as the work of Coper, Rie and Ian Godfrey in creating his sculptural stoneware vessels.
